Road Racing Comes To Salem Speedway June 2nd

SALEM, IN, May 23 – A new type of racing is set to unfold at Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery on Sunday afternoon, June 2nd, as the inaugural “Salem Roval Grand Prix” takes center stage.

The road racing type event for the Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive Stocks and the FAST Series Legends Cars will utilize both the infield short-track and a portion of the half-mile high banks.  Drivers will navigate the road course, which measures nearly a half-mile in distance, from the high banked track to the short-track and back.

“It’s a challenging layout with tight turns, both left- and right-hand, combined with high speed areas,” said track general manager Richard Deaton.  “The Legends Cars have raced on road courses in the past, but this is something completely new for the Front Wheel Drive guys.  It should be interesting.”

The FAST Series Legends Cars will kick-off the roval action with a 25-lap feature, followed by a one-hour timed event for the Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive Stocks.

“Twenty-five lap main events, that take about 10-minutes to complete, are the norm for the Front Wheel Drive division,” said Deaton.  “A one-hour race is more of an endurance event for both the car and driver.  The correct race strategy may very well determine the outcome of the event.  The driver with the fastest car may not necessarily win the race.”

A number of drivers that don’t regularly race at Salem have inquired about the upcoming race and indicated their intentions of competing in the inaugural event.

The Sunday racing action also includes the O’Reilly Auto Parts Pure Stocks on the quarter-mile oval.

Travis Rogers of Charlestown, Ind., Mike Kestler of Louisville and Greg Smith of Louisville remained locked in a tight battle for the top spot in the Pure Stock standings.  Rogers leads the standings with Kestler three points back in second place and Smith just seven points behind Kestler in third.

Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery will once again be giving away free Hoosier Lottery scratch-off tickets to several lucky fans, age 18 and older, during the event.

Spectator gates open at 11:30 a.m. on June 2nd, with practice at noon, followed by the first race at 1 p.m. (EDT).

Advance general admission tickets are priced at just $10 for adults and $3 for children, age 7-12.  Kids, age 6 and under, are admitted free with an adult.
